Stow-on-the-Wold is a small, but well-known, market town of about 2000 people set in the Cotswold Hills and near the north-east corner of the English county of Gloucestershire.

Set on a hill top, it stands beside the Roman Fosse Way at its junction with six other roads, and where a settlement has existed since the Iron Age.

Like many of the Cotswold towns and villages, the houses were built with the very distinctive mellow Cotswold stone from the local quarries. Many of the buildings date back to the 16th century.

Stow-on-the-Wold lies between Bristol (50 miles), Birmingham (45 miles) and Oxford (30 miles).

St Edwards Church was built between the 11th and 15th centuries, and the 88' high tower was completed in 1447.

St Edwards Hall was built in 1878, and now houses the Public Library as well being the venue for many activities in the spacious upstairs hall (see What's on in Stow).

Loco 4920 leaving ToddingtonThe main-line railway to London Paddington has stations at Kingham (4 miles) and Moreton-in-Marsh (4 miles).

For a more historic and nostalgic railway journey, Stow-on-the-Wold is only ten miles from the steam Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway at Toddington.

For the tourist, nearby places to visit include Moreton-in-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden, Winchcombe, Broadway, Northleach, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Evesham, Stratford-upon-Avon, Chipping Norton, Banbury, Burford, Woodstock, Cheltenham, and the city of Gloucester.

Closest of all are the villages of Broadwell, Donnington, Longborough, Condicote, Upper and Lower Swell, Maugersbury, and Upper and Lower Oddington.
